The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
