The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
