British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
